PAST SIMPLE
We use the simple past to refer to an action in the past that is finished.
Examples:
I lived in Paris for 1 year.
1 year in Paris - Now I live in London

John went to the beach yesterday.
PAST CONTINUOUS
Use the Past Continuous to indicate that a longer action in the past was interrupted.
Examples:
You were studying when she called.
Were you studying when she called?
You were not studying when she called.
Example:

I was singing
You were singing
He was singing
She was singing
It was singing
We were singing
They were singing
